The EU RASFF system published an alert notification on 2 June 2026 (reference 2026.4858) concerning cardamom found to contain the pesticide anthraquinone at 0.048 mg/kg, above the maximum permitted level of 0.02 mg/kg. The risk is classified as potentially serious and the finding was based on the company's own check.

The notification was submitted by France. The origin of the product is Czechia, Guatemala and Hungary. The cardamom was distributed to a number of countries, including Croatia, which is designated for follow-up.

Measures taken in various countries include detention by operators, return to consignor and informing recipients. Croatia reported the outcome of its investigation on 28 July 2026.
